The Otter

The Otter African Trail Run, otherwise called “The Otter,” is Africa’s premier marathon-distance trail running event. Dubbed the “Grail of Trail,” it takes place along the world-renowned five-day Otter Trail in South Africa’s Tsitsikamma National Park—a route that is otherwise strictly off-limits to trail runners. The event is unique because it compresses a legendary five-day hike into a single, intense 42km marathon.

The Two Faces of the Otter

While the trail itself is consistent, the event is split into two distinct formats:

  • The Otter “Race”: This is the competitive event designed for elite and highly experienced runners. It features a demanding 9-hour cut-off and is ITRA-registered.

  • The Otter “Challenge”: Aimed at those who want to experience the trail with a bit less pressure, the Challenge offers a more generous 11-hour cut-off.

The Direction: Classic vs. Retto

The race alternates direction every year to keep the challenge fresh:

  • Classic Edition: Runs East to West, starting at Storms River and finishing in Nature’s Valley.

  • Retto Edition: Runs West to East, starting in Nature’s Valley and finishing at Storms River. The 2026 edition is scheduled as a Retto year.

Course Highlights & Technicality

The Otter is famous for being “twice as tough” as a road marathon. Key features include:

  • Elevation: Approximately 2,600 meters of vertical gain.

  • The Stairs: Roughly 7,000 steps carved into the coastal cliffs.

  • River Crossings: Four significant river crossings, including the legendary Bloukrans River, which often requires a swim (assisted by safety divers).

  • The Prologue: A 4km seeding race held the day before the main event to determine your starting batch.
