SALAMA HILLS (2): 29-30 JUL 2023
The course for Salama Hills (2) is more intense and technical than Salama Hills (1). The weekend of fun includes a Saturday sundown ride with a bush dinner.
- Solo event with teams being the preferred format
- Saturday 07:30 – 70 km main / 40 km Lite
- Sunday 07:30 – 40 km main / 25 km Lite
- Youth teams 15-17 must be accompanied by an adult
- Beer, BS & Massage is available all weekend.
A good level of physical fitness with average technical skills are sufficient, this weekend’s event is designed for racing fun and family camping.
The extensive network of rural access roads provides 2 days of breathtaking mountain biking. Carry your camera, consider it as essential equipment as many of the hilltop views will cause you to stop & stare across the vast countryside. Mt Kilimanjaro is visible on clear days.
Lite Routes: remain close to the Stanley Farm, with gorgeous views along rolling rural tracks, it is suitable for any strong cyclist over 12 years of age. Parental supervision is mandatory.
VENUE: hosted on the beautiful Stanley Dairy Ranch, Ulu – 2 km south of Salama Town on Mombasa highway. The expected drive time from JKIA is 2 hours for 75 km. The campsite is 3 km off the highway.
LOW ALTITUDE & BIG HILLS will exert considerable cardio-vascular demands on all participants. If you are not well trained you can ride as gently as you please, your enjoyment is key.
CHALLENGING TRAIL TERRAIN with steep climbs/descents and technical sections.
GPS ENABLED SELF-NAVIGATION is core to all RVO events. A Garmin GPS is required by each rider (or team) to self-navigate, there are no course markings on this adventure.
INTERVAL START participants will start off at 3-minute intervals in reverse seed order (fastest last)
WATER POINTS a single water point per stage. In line with true adventures, participants should be self-sufficient for on-ride nutrition.
MEDICAL SUPPORT A paramedic will be in the camp to provide support.
VEHICLE SUPPORT is not provided; only medical extraction will be provided
MECHANICAL SUPPORT is provided by the Bike Shop, Karen
TUBELESS WITH SEALANT Whistling thorns and sharp rocks abound on stage 2 so tubeless tires filled with an extra dose of sealant is essential (Stan’s is best).
KENYA ROAD MAP is available for purchase from RVO; pre-loaded on a micro-SD chip ready for plugging into your Garmin.
