Rat Race – The Crossing

Rat Race – The Crossing: A Coast-to-Coast MTB Rite of Passage

The Crossing is one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic multi-day mountain biking challenges, an epic 200-mile (320km) journey from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Carving a dramatic line across the width of England, the route traverses three of the country’s most breathtaking National Parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. Designed for the “fat-tyre brigade,” this fully supported expedition is a true test of endurance and a celebration of British cross-country riding.

The Experience: This is a classic “coast-to-coast” adventure with a distinctly communal atmosphere. Riders start by dipping their front wheels in the sea on the Cumbrian coast and conclude with a finish-line tradition of fish and chips and ice cream at the seaside in Scarborough. While the miles are “gnarly” and the climbs are significant, the event is defined by its camaraderie, with shared overnight stays in local hostels and B&Bs fostering a team-like spirit among participants.

Course & Geography Highlights:

  • The Route: A three-stage journey typically split by National Park. The first stage tackles the rugged peaks and technical trails of the Lake District; the second crosses the rolling fells and limestone scars of the Yorkshire Dales; and the final day traverses the expansive, purple-heathered plateaus of the North York Moors.

  • Terrain: The route is a classic mix of “pure Rat Race” trails—expect technical singletrack, ancient bridleways, and stony tracks, connected by fast-flowing gravel and quiet rural road sections that offer a welcome reprieve for the legs.

  • The Challenge: With a total vertical gain of approximately 16,000 feet (5,000m), the course includes everything from steep “hike-a-bike” sections to long, sweeping descents.

Logistics & Support: Rat Race provides a “turn-up-and-ride” service, including all meals (hearty breakfasts, pit-stop snacks, and dinners), luggage transfers, and mechanical support. It is an accessible way to tackle a serious wilderness crossing, supported by a professional crew of medics, mechanics, and safety staff, making it a “bucket-list” achievement for mountain bikers of various levels.
