MTB Trilogy: A Pure, Raw Backcountry Masterclass
The MTB Trilogy is a legendary, multi-day mountain bike and enduro stage race that takes riders deep into the wild, raw landscapes of the Broumov region on the border of the Czech Republic and Poland. Known within the European cycling community as a race that demands you step far outside your comfort zone, it completely eschews manicured paths or sanitized trail parks in favor of technical, unyielding terrain. Riders are tested across massive sandstone formations, pinewood singletracks, ancient volcanic ridgelines, and deep rock blocks that require absolute focus, exceptional bike handling, and an unwavering sense of adventure.
What sets the MTB Trilogy apart from standard events is its unique, dual-disciplinary nature. It serves simultaneously as a brutal cross-country marathon stage race and an aggressive Enduro race. For those brave enough to tackle the Enduro category, each day features up to ten timed special downhill tests that demand maximum speed through loose shale, steep root structures, and sharp granite slabs. The central hub for this high-octane weekend is the small park of Teplice nad Metují, which serves as the daily start and finish line. Here, the event builds a tightly knit, high-adrenaline village community where international elite riders, e-bikers, and hardcore enthusiasts gather post-stage to wash off the mountain dust, swap battle stories, and bond over hearty local food.
The stages themselves are masterpiece creations of pure cross-country architecture. Following a punchy, heart-rate-spiking prologue designed to seed the riders through tight pinewood gaps, the journey heads into the borderlands. Stage 1 (Vraní Hory) takes riders along the ridge of the Czech-Polish border, forcing a relentless climb up to the high peak of Královecký Špičák to reward them with panoramic views of the Giant Mountains. The day concludes with the feared, highly technical descent down Jánský Hill, dropping over loose, dusty rock faces. Stage 2 (Kleine Alpen) takes the physical and mental challenge even higher, guiding the pack over old volcanoes in Poland’s Javoří Mountains. This stage includes a surreal, pitch-black passage directly through a historic, 385-meter-long abandoned railway tunnel. With a fierce reputation for loose, steep downhills and unforgiving vertical gradients, the Trilogy remains an absolute badge of honor for any rider looking to experience mountain biking in its most honest, rugged, and uncompromised form.
