The Kruger2Canyon Challenge: Peaks, Bushveld, and Biosphere
The Kruger2Canyon Challenge (K2C) is an iconic, multi-day trail running and hiking stage race nestled in the spectacular Lowveld region of South Africa. Centered around the rural mountain village of Kampersrus, the event takes place within the UNESCO-recognized Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. This unique landscape serves as a meeting point for two completely distinct biomes: the soaring, mist-shrouded northern peaks of the Drakensberg escarpment and the wild, game-filled savannahs bordering the Kruger National Park ecosystem.
The Contrasting Biomes:
-
Day 1: The Mountain Stage: The opening day introduces a beast of a challenge as the longer routes head directly vertical. Runners take on the relentless, heart-pumping climbs of Mariepskop Mountain, traversing indigenous forests and towering sandstone features to reach majestic viewpoints overlooking the Blyde River Canyon.
-
Day 2: The Bushveld Stage: In stark contrast, the second day drops into the undulating, sun-warmed lowveld terrain. Runners wind through the singletracks and game viewing jeep roads of the Blue Canyon Conservancy and Moholoholo Mountain View Reserve. It is an authentic bushveld experience where you share the trails with local wildlife under the canopy of classic acacia trees.
