Green Mountain Stage Race
The Green Mountain Stage Race is a four-day road cycling stage race held each September in the heart of Vermont’s Mad River Valley, built around the classic components of a European-style stage race: a time trial, a circuit race, a road race, and a closing criterium.
The race opens with an individual time trial starting in Warren Village, a short, punchy effort that climbs out of the valley before rolling home along fast country roads to a rising finish. Stage 2 is a circuit race based in Randolph, with category-specific distances giving every field, its own version of the same rolling, technical course, complete with a level rail crossing, a narrow bridge underpass, and a categorised climb at the Brookfield Gulf summit.
Stage 3 is the race’s centerpiece: a point-to-point road race that threads through the postcard Vermont towns of Waitsfield, Warren, Granville, and Hancock before crossing the Green Mountains not once but twice. The first crossing, Middlebury Gap, passes Middlebury College’s historic Bread Loaf campus and the former home of poet Robert Frost. The second, and decisive, crossing is Appalachian Gap — Vermont’s highest four-season maintained road — where the final steep pitches, chalked by fans and lined with cheering crowds, regularly shape the outcome of the overall classification.
The race closes with a fast, technical criterium on smooth, sewer-grate-free pavement, giving sprinters and crowd-pleasing racing a proper send-off to end the week.
Together, the four stages test every kind of rider — time trialists, climbers, tacticians, and sprinters alike — across some of the most scenic and demanding roads in the Green Mountains, making GMSR a staple on the North American stage race calendar for riders chasing a complete, old-school stage racing experience.
