Gorilla Gravel
Gorilla Gravel brings stage racing to Rwanda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” in a country whose relationship with cycling runs deeper than almost anywhere else in Africa — home to the continent’s most popular professional race, the Tour of Rwanda, and a country that has hosted UCI World Championship-level competition.
The race opens with a fast, spectator-lined prologue criterium just outside Kigali, where the crowd energy sets the tone for the days ahead. From there, stages carry riders east through green valleys of rice fields and banana plantations, overlooking the plains toward Tanzania, before a fast, flowing stage along the shores of Lake Kivu tests pure speed. A relentless stage of small, stacking climbs often decides the overall race more than any single mountain could, before the route finishes on volcanic ground, climbing into misty rainforest in the shadow of the mountain gorillas’ home range.
Beyond the racing, what sets Gorilla Gravel apart is the atmosphere — thousands of children lining rural roads, cheering every rider through, in a country where the bicycle is transport, livelihood, and passion all at once. Accommodation mixes hotels with camping nights, and the event includes full timing, feed and tech zones, daily luggage transport, and medical support throughout.
Whether you’re racing for GC or riding for the experience, Gorilla Gravel offers something increasingly rare: a stage race where the emotional impact of the place is every bit as memorable as the terrain itself. It’s a route that rewards climbers and rouleurs alike, set against some of the most striking scenery on the African continent, and capped off with a return to Kigali to celebrate the journey together.
