Homeward Bound Challenge

Are you looking for an event with a difference?

The Homeward bound Challenge (HBC) is an ultra distance MTB event that will push you to your limits.

Over the last three years riders have been overwhelmed by the sense of achievement they feel as they crossed the finish line that began at Mountain Splendour eco-resort and finished more than 220 km later at Cascades MTB park.

For the fourth running of this event there was an exciting change to the route. It still began at Mountain Splendour eco-resort but it now ended 300km later at Salt Rock on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

It does sound like it is a lot longer but it was only 44km longer than the old route as there was a 28km transition stage from one check point to the next. Riders were required to get into their support vehicle, travel the specified 28km, get out and continue riding down to the coast. There were a number of reasons that we had decided to go with the transition idea. The primary reason is trying to decrease the difficulty and distance of the event. We also felt that by adding this transition stage the support driver will more part of the team and play a key role in the success of the team. This format worked well for the teams.

This seemingly insurmountable challenge is made easier, by the fact that your back up driver will be able to follow and assist you for large portions of the event. The driver is an integral member of the team.

Choosing the right team mate/s, and making sure you are prepared, is key to having an enjoyable Homeward Bound Challenge. It is recommended that you enter an event such as Hill2Hill as training for the Homeward Bound Challenge.

Over the last three years the event has captured the imagination of riders ranging from the racing snakes up front to the weekend warrior at the tail end.
