Etna Marathon Tour

Five days and five stages of pure mountain bike on the slopes of the highest active volcano in Europe. A race only for fifty teams which will challenge themselves from the base of the main crater to the end of the famous Milo’s single tracks. Through ancient lava flows, extinguished craters, woods which are thousands of years old, lunar landscape and thick vegetation. And again rocks, volcanic sand, single track, very hard climbs and tricky downhills, with the breath of Mount Etna in the background. One timed prologue and four stages with over 260 kilometers of off road and 8,000 metres of vertical gain.

All this is Etna Marathon Tour, a challenge to the Volcano. A new exciting adventure on your mountain bike as never before.
You will discover the true essence of mountain biking, single track and volcanic soil, all seasoned with the sun, food and wine of Sicily.

50 teams, 100 bikers, Mount Etna, a volcanic challenge

Mount Etna is a great place for biking. You can find unique breathtaking scenery on this fantastic 3300 m a.s.l high mountain with views which allow visitors to admire the whole Sicilian landscape. Mount Etna is rich in both flora and fauna, hosting many plants typical to Etna and wildlife such as foxes, snakes, royal eagles and wild cats. Ride through oak and pine forests as well as old lava flows to experience Etna’s varied scenery on rides taking you practically all the way round Etna from the southern to northern slopes on the high mountain (altamontana) route from the Melia (1700m a.s.l.) to Rifugio Brunek.

You can get the chance to ride up to Etna’s craters from Rifugio Sapienza (1900 m a.s.l.) to 2900 m a.s.l. and then descend down its northern slopes towards Piano Provenzana ski station (1900 m a.s.l.)on a superb long descent. Besides getting the chance to ride the infamous and extremely tough Etna MX course near the picturesque village Milo on Etna’s wooded eastern foothills, with its tough climbs and fast technical descents, plus it’s the setting for the 2013 Italian MTB Marathon championships. Here you will ride beside old lava flows, through Chestnut, Oak, Pine and even Silver Birch tree woods. All in all, this is the perfect way to see Etna’s varied landscape.
